a word about the weather

I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Which means I’m pretty clueless when it comes to the weather. I know it gets chilly in the winter here – when it dips into the 40s and 50s, brr! – and we usually get rain in the spring. I know that June is gloomy and the dry Santa Ana winds usually blow through in late summer or early fall. Sometimes that causes fires.

As everybody knows, when you have an outdoor garden, you are at the mercy of the weather. So, I’ve been much more attentive this year. And boy, did we pick a no-good-very-bad year to start a vegetable garden. (more…)

homegrown culver city

Stopped by the HomeGrown Culver City gardening event yesterday morning, which was held at a park near my work. It was free to attend and promised a bunch of educational workshops and local vendors, so there really was no excuse not to at least take a lookie.

seeds and seedlings

Not much going on outdoors at the plot (not really all that excited at the prospect of harvesting yet more zukes). But indoors, the seedlings are stretching up and out quite nicely. Which is fine by us, considering it’s been gray and drizzly for the past week here in L.A.

(Out popped pretty jewel-toned seedlings. Each seed can produce several plants, so will need to thin them out at some point.)
