seeds and seedlings

17 Oct

Not much going on outdoors at the plot (not really all that excited at the prospect of harvesting yet more zukes). But indoors, the seedlings are stretching up and out quite nicely. Which is fine by us, considering it’s been gray and drizzly for the past week here in L.A.

(Little nugget-shaped Swiss chard seeds)

(Out popped pretty jewel-toned seedlings. Each seed can produce several plants, so will need to thin them out at some point.)

Three of the five spinach seeds that I sandwiched between moist paper towels germinated after about seven days. Welp, there you go; I guess the method works. We carefully picked them up with a pair of tweezers and transferred them into the Jiffy cell packs. They’re growing pretty fast and true leaves are already starting to emerge. Will start a few more in about a week, for successive plantings.

Are these for fall plantings? I assume they are not for spring as it is way too early.

    Yes, they’re definitely for fall/winter!
